Microsoft to Invest $17.5 Billion in India to Accelerate AI Diffusion at Population Scale
Microsoft is committing $17.5 billion to India between CY 2026 and 2029, its largest investment in Asia. The plan aims to deepen cloud and artificial intelligence infrastructure, expand skills programmes, and support operations nationwide, building on the earlier $3 billion allocation scheduled to be fully deployed by end-CY2026.
The announcement follows a meeting between Microsoft Chairman and CEO Satya Nadella and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, held before Microsoft's India AI tour. Both leaders discussed India’s AI roadmap, growth priorities and how technology could reach more people. The investment centres on three pillars: scale, skills and sovereignty.

Microsoft AI investment in India
A major share of the Microsoft AI investment in India strengthens cloud and AI infrastructure in India through a new India South Central region in Hyderabad. This hyperscale region is expected to be operational by mid-2026. It will have three availability zones and an area comparable to two Eden Gardens stadiums combined.
Microsoft AI investment in India and cloud and AI infrastructure in India for sovereignty
Another focus of the Microsoft AI investment in India is secure, sovereign-ready services that support cloud and AI infrastructure in India. Microsoft is introducing Sovereign Public Cloud and Sovereign Private Cloud for domestic customers. Azure Local offers hundreds of node scale, external SAN storage integration and the latest NVIDIA GPUs for compliant, high-performance workloads.
Microsoft 365 Local, which runs on Sovereign Private Cloud powered by Azure Local, is also available to Indian organisations. Alongside this, Microsoft will keep expanding existing data centre regions in Chennai, Hyderabad and Pune, giving enterprises, startups and public sector bodies more resilient, low-latency options for critical applications.
The Microsoft AI investment in India also supports people-focused cloud and AI infrastructure in India. Advanced AI tools will be built into the Ministry of Labour and Employment’s e-Shram and National Career Service platforms. Microsoft’s workforce of over 22,000 employees in Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Pune, Gurugram, Noida and other cities will help deliver these plans.
