Ministry of Education Unveils APAAR Card for Students to Monitor Academic Records
In a significant move aimed at transforming the way academic records are managed, the Government of India has introduced the Automated Permanent Academic Account Registry or APAAR. Under the "One Nation, One ID" program, APAAR offers a unique 12-digit identification number that will serve as a lifelong academic record for students, beginning from pre-primary education through to higher education.
This initiative is part of the National Education Policy (NEP) and is set to create a centralized digital repository of academic documentation for all students across the country.

What is the APAAR ID for Students?
The APAAR ID is similar in concept to the Aadhaar Card, where each student is assigned a unique 12-digit number. This number will meticulously track the academic journey of a student across various educational levels, including school, junior college, degree college, and post-graduation. It will encompass critical information, such as scholarships received by the student and all credits accumulated during academic courses.
Moreover, these credits are intimately linked with the Academic Bank of Credits (ABC), an official government initiative. When a student completes a course or semester, the earned credits are directly reflected in the ABC, ensuring their validity across all universities in India. This groundbreaking feature will enable students to transfer between educational institutions in India without concerns about the recognition and validation of their previous education.
Accessibility and Registration Process for APAAR ID
The accessibility of APAAR ID is streamlined through the DigiLocker platform, where students can view their academic records, including the APAAR ID, listed as ABC ID in the Education section. To register for APAAR ID, students must meet the following criteria:
- Possess a valid Aadhaar Card.
- Have an active DigiLocker account, which will be used for eKYC verification.
- Consent from the student's parents is required during the registration process.
The registration process is designed to be straightforward:
- Visit abc.gov.in and click on "My Account," selecting the "Student" option.
- Log in to your DigiLocker account using your credentials.
- Agree to share your Aadhaar Card details with ABC for KYC verification when prompted.
- Provide the necessary academic details, including the school or university name, course name, etc.
- Save the information, and your registration is complete.
Notably, the data within the APAAR ID is regularly updated by educational institutions. It is directly linked to the student's Aadhaar Card, meaning that each student can have only one APAAR ID that remains valid for a lifetime.
The "One Nation, One ID" Vision
The introduction of the APAAR ID aligns with the government's broader vision of consolidating academic records. The aim is to replace multiple mark sheets and documents with a single card that carries a student's complete academic history. This streamlined approach is expected to enhance accessibility and facilitate efficient student mobility across the country's educational landscape.
The Union Education Ministry has issued a notification to educational institutions, urging them to implement the use of APAAR. Importantly, registration for APAAR is voluntary, not mandatory, offering students the flexibility to opt-out. While schools are reaching out to parents to obtain consent, students can also register independently and provide the details to their educational institutes.
While APAAR holds immense potential to transform academic record-keeping in India, it also raises concerns, including the administrative burden of enrollment and the need to ensure robust data security to prevent potential breaches.
APAAR is a significant step toward streamlining academic documentation, reducing redundancy, and facilitating seamless educational transitions for students across India.
