Mobile Numbers Linked to Banking Services Will Be Deleted if Inactive from April 1

Starting April 1, mobile numbers linked to bank accounts and UPI apps like Google Pay, PhonePe, and Paytm will be deleted if they are inactive. The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has directed banks and these apps to remove such numbers by March 31. This change aims to address issues arising from unused or recycled mobile numbers.

Inactive or recycled mobile numbers pose a problem for transactions. If a number isn't used for voice calls, SMS, or data for 90 days, it becomes inactive. Such numbers are then reallocated to new users. This can cause issues when these numbers are linked to financial services.

Important Notice on Mobile Number Deletion

Mobile numbers serve as the primary identity for payment services. If there's an issue with your number, transactions might fail. Many users link multiple numbers to their bank accounts or UPI apps. However, if any of these numbers remain unused for months, they risk being deleted.

To prevent transaction issues, NPCI has mandated that banks and UPI apps update their list of deleted numbers weekly. This ensures that any inactive or recycled number is promptly removed from their systems after April 1.

If you wish to keep your current number active, recharge it immediately. Ensure you use services like SMS, voice calls, or data within 90 days to avoid deactivation. This proactive step will help maintain your number's association with your financial accounts.

The new rules aim to streamline the process of handling inactive numbers. Previously, customers had to manually request the deletion of such numbers from banks. Now, this will be automatically managed by banks and UPI apps.

By implementing these changes, the confusion surrounding inactive mobile numbers will be reduced. Users won't need to worry about their numbers being reallocated without their knowledge.

In summary, ensure your mobile number remains active if it's linked to financial services. Regularly using your SIM card for basic services will help retain its association with your bank accounts and UPI apps.
