National Technology Day: Know The History Of This Important Day

The National Technology Day is celebrated on May 11. This day marks the anniversary of the Pokhran Nuclear Test (Operation Shakti) in 1998.

Specifically speaking, the Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) carried out five nuclear tests at Pokhran (Rajasthan) on May 11, 1998. Eminent Scientist and former President of India, A P J Abdul Kalam led the operation.

Simply put, India became a "Nuclear State" on May 11, 1998. After the successful nuclear tests, then Prime Minister of India, Atal Bihari Vajpayee declared 11 May as National Technology Day.

National Technology Day: Significance

National Technology Day is intended to highlight the significance of science and quantum leaps in the field of technology. Especially for India, the day marks the scientist and engineers' valuable contribution to the field of science and technology.

APJ Kalam had said with the power of technology, Indian youngsters should dream big for the country. Hence, Atal Bihari Vajpayee declared 11 May as National Technology Day to celebrate the efforts of scientists, engineers, and technological advancement in the country.

National Technology Day also encourages new youngsters to pursue a career in science or at the very least, take an interest in technology. Even the current Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi said:

"With the passage of time, the country which does not adopt modern technology, time moves ahead leaving it behind. India was a victim of this during the Third Industrial Revolution. But today we can proudly say that India is guiding the world in the fourth industrial revolution, Industry 4.0."

National Technology Day 2023: Theme, Awards

Technology moves ahead at a very rapid pace. Hence, National Technology Day gets a new theme each year.

The National Technology Day 2023's theme is "Integrated Approach in Science and Technology for a Sustainable Future". Needless to say, this theme lays emphasis on developing and adopting technology to create a sustainable future.

Every year on National Technology Day, several innovators and entrepreneurs are given awards for their outstanding contributions to the field of science and technology. Additionally, the Technology Development Board (TDB) has created a National Award commemorating this day.

TDB Award is awarded to multiple individuals as well as industries for their productive accomplishments in Indigenous Technology commercialization. The awards are given by the President of India.
