NE Exodus: 309 Blocked URLs List Leaked Online

Going by the latest turn of events in the nation, the Indian government is forcing the social networks like Facebook, Twitter and Google to censor the hate content as a step against the NE Exodus, which is threatening the northeasterners in cities like Bangalore, Pune and others.

Latest reports have confirmed that a list of 309 URLs – which have been banned by the government between August 18 to August 21, 2012 in order to resolve the NE Exodus – has been leaked online. The list comprises of URLs, Twitter accounts, blog posts, image tags and many other websites.

An analysis of the leaked items by Pranesh Prakash, the programme manager at Centre for Internet and Society (CIS) mentioned that, "It is clear that the list was not compiled with sufficient care.” He added that "people and posts debunking rumors have been blocked."

"The blocking of many of the items on that list are legally questionable and morally indefensible, even while a some of the items ought, in my estimation, to be removed." he further added.

The ISPs in the country are also known to go by the government's order, similar to the previous incidents wherein they blocked the entire domains rather than URLs.

"This analysis is based on the orders sent around to ISPs, and not on the basis of actual testing of how many of these have actually been blocked by Airtel, BSNL, Tata, etc. Additionally, if you are using Twitter through a client (on your desktop, mobile, etc.) instead of the web interface, you will not notice any of the Twitter-related blocks," he elaborated further.

Due to the rigorous sensitivity in the issue, Prakash mentioned in the report that “it would be premature to share the whole list." However, he also said that the CIS is planning to make the whole list of blocked URLs public soon.
