What Is Nike’s Project Amplify? How It Leverages Robotics to Boost Running and Walking Speed
Nike has introduced Project Amplify, the world's first powered footwear system aimed at enhancing running and walking experiences. This innovative system is designed to help everyday athletes increase their speed and distance with less effort.
How It Leverages Robotics to Boost Running and Walking Speed
By augmenting natural lower leg and ankle movements, Project Amplify offers an unmatched boost for those looking to improve their pace. The system is built on motion algorithms from the Nike Sport Research Lab. It features a lightweight motor, drive belt, and rechargeable cuff battery. These components integrate seamlessly with carbon fiber-plated running shoe, which can be used with or without the system. This setup allows athletes to enjoy longer and more frequent runs or walks.

Focus on Everyday Athletes
Project Amplify is not intended for competitive runners aiming to cut seconds off their time. Instead, it targets athletes who want to enhance their everyday movement by providing extra power. The product is particularly beneficial for those running at a 10- to 12-minute mile pace, making slower jogging and walking more enjoyable.
Similar to how electric bikes have transformed urban commuting by making longer rides easier, Project Amplify aims to make running and walking more accessible and fun. The system acts like an additional set of calf muscles, helping users move faster and farther with less effort.
Extensive Testing and Development
The development of Project Amplify involved insights from the Nike Sport Research Lab's testing with athletes of varying abilities. Participants reported that the system felt like an extension of their body, making uphill movement feel as easy as walking on flat ground. Some users even improved their pace from a 12-minute mile to a 10-minute mile.
Over several years, more than 400 athletes participated in extensive testing both outdoors and in the NSRL. They covered over 2.4 million steps—equivalent to about 12,000 laps around the NSRL's 200-meter track—across nine different hardware versions. Each iteration focused on refining specific elements of the system.
Future Launch Plans
Nike continues to blend art and science as Project Amplify remains in its testing phase. The goal is to achieve performance readiness for a broad consumer launch in the coming years. This innovative footwear system promises to redefine possibilities for everyday athletes seeking enhanced running and walking experiences.
The insights gained from this extensive testing phase are crucial for refining Project Amplify before its official release. As Nike works towards bringing this product to market, they aim to offer a unique solution that combines technology with athletic performance enhancement.
