We all are familiar with the Facebook-owned Oculus VR headsets which allow a user to experience 3D content. Now, it is being reported that Oculus is working towards developing an immersive theatre format that is said to make use of VR (Virtual Reality) in order to help the audiences to interact with live actors in a way which is said to change the narrative with every performance.

The report further suggests that while VR performances are not a new thing, the new format which is being rolled out for the users will allow the viewers to interact with the characters allowing the users to come out of their own comfort zone says executive producer of experiences at Oculus, Yelena Rachitsky, describing it as indie game 'Journey' that meets interactive theater show 'Sleep No More'.

Rachitsky further said while speaking to CNET in the lead-up to the Tribeca Film Festival that, "We're really interested in, how do you create that experience of live actors without needing to be in a site-specific location. It's a way to scale". She also revealed that the project is expected to be unveiled next year, and according to some industry insiders, would go a long way in possibly taking the technology mainstream.

However, it is worth noting the fact that the immersive theatre is bigger with every passing year. Even as it has still remained a rather less explored genre so far like most of the other VR applications, the success of productions like 'Sleep No More', 'Ghost Light' and 'Then She Fell' simply points in the direction that the use-case for VR in the world of entertainment is subsequently raised. The Sleep No More is a VR adaptation on Shakespear's Macbeth and Then She Fell is a VR adaptation of Alice in Wonderland.

Also, with Facebook hosting its annual F8 developer conference in San Jose, California, it would be quite interesting to see if the company sheds some lights on the details of Oculus's new VR project, knowing the fact that AR and VR will be the area of focus for Facebook this year.
Immersive VR theatre is still in its nascent stages, so some more clarification from the company would certainly go a long way in giving VR enthusiasts some idea about what to expect from the new format going forward.
