Samsung and OpenAI Announce Strategic Partnership

Samsung Electronics' Role

Samsung Electronics is set to become a strategic memory partner for OpenAI's Stargate initiative. With OpenAI's memory needs expected to reach 900,000 DRAM wafers monthly, Samsung will provide advanced semiconductor solutions. Their extensive range of high-performance DRAM solutions will help meet this demand efficiently.

As a comprehensive semiconductor provider, Samsung offers leading technologies across memory, logic, and foundry. Their diverse product portfolio supports the entire AI workflow from training to inference. Additionally, their expertise in advanced chip packaging and integration between memory and system semiconductors provides unique solutions for OpenAI.

Samsung SDS' Contribution

Samsung SDS has entered into a potential partnership with OpenAI to jointly develop AI data centers and provide enterprise AI services. They will collaborate on designing and operating the Stargate AI data centers using their expertise in advanced data center technologies.

Under the letter of intent (LOI), Samsung SDS can offer consulting and management services for businesses integrating OpenAI's AI models into their systems. They have also signed a reseller partnership for OpenAI's services in Korea to support local companies adopting ChatGPT Enterprise offerings.

Collaboration with Samsung C&T and Heavy Industries

Samsung C&T and Samsung Heavy Industries are focusing on advancing global AI data centers through joint development of floating data centers with OpenAI. These floating centers offer benefits like addressing land scarcity and reducing cooling costs but face technical challenges limiting wider deployment.

Building on proprietary technologies, these companies will explore projects in floating power plants and control centers alongside floating data center infrastructure. This collaboration marks a significant step towards supporting Korea's ambition to be among the top three nations in AI globally.

The partnership with OpenAI is just the beginning for Samsung as they aim to create new opportunities within the field of AI. They are also considering broader adoption of ChatGPT within their companies to facilitate workplace transformation through AI.
