OpenAI Sets Foot in India: First Office to Open in New Delhi

OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, is set to establish its first office in India, located in New Delhi, later this year. This move signifies a deeper engagement with its second-largest user base globally. India represents a significant market for OpenAI and this initiative aims to cater to the nearly one billion internet users in the country.

OpenAI's Strategic Expansion

OpenAI has already registered as a legal entity in India and commenced hiring for its local team. The company shared this development through a statement with Reuters. "Opening our first office and building a local team is an important first step in our commitment to make advanced AI more accessible across the country and to build AI for India, and with India," stated OpenAI CEO Sam Altman.

Despite these advancements, OpenAI faces legal challenges within India. Several news outlets and book publishers have accused the firm of using their content without permission for training ChatGPT. OpenAI has refuted these allegations.

Competitive Landscape

The Indian market presents stiff competition for OpenAI from companies like Google's Gemini and AI startup Perplexity. These competitors have launched services offering free advanced plans to numerous users in the region.

According to recent market data shared by OpenAI, India boasts the largest population of student users on ChatGPT. Furthermore, the number of weekly active users has quadrupled over the past year.

In the same, OpenAI recently introduced ChatGPT Go, a budget-friendly subscription plan designed for Indian users. It is priced at ₹399 monthly, making it one of the most budget-friendly options from the company.
