Study Finds Parents Often Stumped By Children's Curious Questions

Parents often struggle to provide immediate answers to their children's questions, according to a recent study by Amazon Alexa. Conducted by Kantar in June 2024, the survey involved over 750 parents from six cities. It found that 54% of parents frequently don't have instant answers to their kids' queries. Additionally, 52% of respondents said they quickly search for accurate answers when unsure.

Interestingly, 44% of surveyed parents admitted to fabricating answers on the spot. Only a small fraction, about 3%, either ignore the question or change the topic to avoid it. Common questions from children include "How to make a car?", "How big is the universe?", and "How do fish breathe underwater?". Parents are often stumped by seemingly simple questions like "What season comes between winter and summer?" or "Why do we wash vegetables?".

Children's Curiosity Triggers

The study also highlighted that kids ask more questions while watching TV, with 63% of parents noting this trend. Other activities that spark curiosity include traveling (57%), studying (56%), outdoor activities (55%), using handheld devices (52%), and listening to adult conversations (50%). Topics like food, animals, nature, general knowledge, holidays, technology, and movies are popular among kids.

More than 80% of parents use technology to find information for their children's questions. Voice AI services like Alexa can be particularly helpful in providing quick answers across various topics. This allows children to satisfy their curiosity with ease. Parents can ask Alexa numerous questions on subjects ranging from science to history.

Encouraging Curiosity

"From asking spontaneous questions to those that are more knowledge-based or unconventional for their age, kids are inherently curious and constantly on the hunt for answers about the world around them," said Dilip R.S., Country Manager for Alexa at Amazon India. "Today, across the world, families with young kids ask Alexa 25 million questions per month – a testimony to Alexa becoming an information and learning hub for parents."

More than 90% of parents encourage their children to ask more questions as a way to help them grow and learn new things. Nearly 92% of parents also learn new things while answering their kids' queries. This mutual learning process benefits both parties.

Deepender Rana, Executive Managing Director – South Asia at Kantar Insights Division, noted that today's kids are more curious than ever. He mentioned that while TV drives curiosity among children, most surveyed parents prefer screen-free learning methods. Voice-first searches via devices like Echo Pop and Echo Dot offer a screen-free solution for finding answers.

With various engaging experiences available on Alexa smart speakers, parents can engage their children in curiosity-driven content safely and effectively.

This study underscores the importance of nurturing children's curiosity through accessible technology and supportive parenting practices.
