Reddit Will Soon Force You To Login To Read Posts, Courtesy Google
For a long-time, Reddit has been the go-to platform for people looking for answers for almost anything. The best part is that you can just browse posts and comments and get the answer to your questions without even having to create an account, but that will soon change.

Reddit has just confirmed that it is moving towards a "logged-in-only experience", with testing set to begin in select markets outside the US in Q4 2026. The company discussed the change during its latest earnings call, with CEO Steve Huffman explaining why Reddit wants more users to sign in. However, the platform has not confirmed exactly what logged-out visitors will still be able to access. Here is what you need to know.
Reddit May Require Users to Log In to Browse
Reddit is exploring a browsing experience that would require users to log in to access the platform. The company plans to test this approach in selected markets outside the US in the coming months, although it has not shared which countries will be included.
Huffman acknowledged that the move could be a big change for people who have used Reddit without an account. He said, “I don’t know about you, but as someone whose life has been defined by the open internet, it’s a big change for me.”
The company has not clarified whether the login requirement would apply to every page or whether some content would remain accessible to logged-out users.
Why Is Reddit Considering a Login Requirement?
One of the main reasons behind the move seems to be Reddit’s effort to protect its data from unauthorised scraping, especially by companies developing AI models. Reddit's discussions and user-generated posts have become valuable sources of data for AI companies, which can use such content to train their models. The platform has also entered data-licensing agreements with AI companies, including Google and OpenAI.
Reddit has also been dealing with a decline in traffic from Google Search. During October, the company saw an average of more than one million fewer search referrals per week. The rise of AI-powered search tools, which can provide answers directly instead of sending users to websites, could be contributing to the drop.
Requiring users to log in could help Reddit better understand its audience and protect its content from automated scraping. It could also support the company’s advertising business, as logged-in users and people accessing Reddit through its app account for more than 80% of its monetisation.
What Happens to Those Who Do Not Want to Log In?
Reddit has not yet explained exactly what logged-out users will be able to access if the login requirement is introduced. The company is also rebuilding its incognito mode for mobile, which could offer users another way to browse without tying their activity to their account.
You can still choose pseudonyms on Reddit, so creating an account does not necessarily mean sharing your real identity. However, the company has not confirmed whether this will be enough for people who prefer to browse without signing in.
For now, the login requirement is still being tested. Reddit has not announced a list of countries or a timeline for a wider rollout, so you will have to wait for more details.
