Tech Giant Qualcomm to Cut 1,258 Jobs Amid Industry Challenges
In a move that mirrors a broader trend in the tech industry this year, Qualcomm Inc., a prominent smartphone chipmaker, has announced plans to reduce its workforce by 1,258 positions. This announcement follows a series of cost-cutting measures undertaken by the company throughout the year.
The layoffs are set to impact workers in San Diego and Santa Clara, California, as per a filing with the California Employment Development Department. With Qualcomm employing approximately 51,000 individuals as of September, the cuts will amount to around 2.5% of the company's total workforce.

Layoffs Across Varied Roles
According to the filing, over 750 jobs will be cut from Qualcomm's engineering teams, affecting roles spanning from executives to technicians. The remainder of the job reductions will extend to a diverse range of positions, including internal technical staff and accounting teams.
Qualcomm is set to terminate 194 employees in Santa Clara and 1,064 staff in San Diego, and the layoffs will take effect in December as mandated by California laws.
Challenges in the Tech Industry
These job cuts are the latest in a series of tech industry layoffs this year, which have impacted startups, tech giants, and a wide range of sectors within the industry. Qualcomm, known for producing processors at the core of Android smartphones and many Apple iPhones, has not been immune to the challenges presented in the current market.
Lower sales of smartphones, especially in markets like China, have eroded Qualcomm's profits. Furthermore, competition from Apple, which is reportedly developing its own in-house smartphone chips, has contributed to the pressures faced by Qualcomm.
The Broader Trend of Tech Layoffs in 2023
This year has been marked by significant layoffs across the tech industry, affecting startups and tech giants alike. Companies like Google, Meta, Amazon, Microsoft, and Salesforce have all announced substantial workforce reductions. TechCrunch's list of tech layoffs in 2023 highlights a steady decline in layoffs over the year, with a peak in January, when industry giants like Microsoft, Amazon, Google, and Salesforce initiated mass layoffs.
Qualcomm's decision to trim its workforce is a reflection of the challenges faced by companies in the ever-evolving tech landscape. As the industry adapts to changing market dynamics, Qualcomm, like many others, is taking proactive measures to navigate these challenges and ensure its sustainability in the highly competitive tech sector.
