Union Budget 2025: India Cuts Import Duty on Ethernet Switches to Lower Telecom Costs

In a move aimed at cutting telecom infrastructure costs and resolving long-standing disputes, the Indian government has halved the import duty on carrier-grade Ethernet switches from 20% to 10%.

Announced by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in the Union Budget 2025-26, this decision is expected to reduce costs for telecom operators, boost network expansion, and simplify customs classification disputes.

Ethernet switches play a critical role in digital connectivity, acting as the backbone of networks for telecom providers, enterprises, and data centers. By lowering import duties, the government is making a clear push to improve digital infrastructure and reduce operational costs for network providers.

The telecom industry has been grappling with disputes over import duties on networking equipment for years. The difference in duty rates between carrier-grade and non-carrier-grade Ethernet switches has led to confusion and tax-related litigations. Manoj Kumar Singh, Director-General of the Digital Infrastructure Providers Association (DIPA), believes this is a significant step forward:

"This reduction in customs duty will not only help resolve industry disputes but also reduce telecom infrastructure costs. Combined with the launch of BharatTradeNet as a unified digital platform, the government is taking meaningful steps to strengthen India's digital backbone and enhance its global trade competitiveness."

Legal experts also view this decision as a long-overdue correction to regulatory hurdles that have caused unnecessary disputes. Manmeet Kaur, Partner at Karanjawala & Co., pointed out:

"For years, companies have faced litigation over the classification of Ethernet switches for customs duties. By aligning the duty rates, the government is addressing a key industry concern and making the telecom sector more business-friendly."
