Windows 10 April 2018 update causes Chrome, Cortana, and other apps to crash
The affected users have reported that the freezing issue is mainly affecting PCs that are backed with an Intel HD 620 or an Intel HD 630 graphics unit on a Kaby Lake series processor.
Microsoft has recently started rolling out the Windows 10 April 2018 update. The latest update brings a set of new features including Windows Timeline, Focus Assist and dedication support among some other changes. However, the latest update also comes with a bug that causes the devices to freeze using while using the apps like Google Chrome or Cortana.
A number of users have reported after the Windows 10 build (version 1803) update their devices freezes. The affected users have further claimed that when their devices become unresponsive it becomes quite difficult to even open the task manager. This means the age-old trick that we use to follow i.e. 'CTRL+Alt+Del' will not work to gain the control back on the devices
Microsoft has also acknowledged the issue and has confirmed that the devices that are running the Windows 10 April update (version 1803) might hang or freeze when using a certain set of apps. Further, Microsoft has also issued a few suggestions that would help the users to restore their devices back to normal stage.
Following are the steps that will help you to restore your device back to the normal stage:
• PC: Press the Windows Key+Ctrl+Shift+B keys simultaneously to return the PC to its normal state. This key combo restarts the graphics driver of a PC.
• Windows 10 Tablet: Press the volume up and down button thrice within 2 seconds simultaneously.
• Laptop: Close and then open the lid of the laptop. (Some users have reported that holding the power button to enter sleep mode and then exiting the sleep mode restored their laptop to normal state)
Microsoft has also assured that it is currently working on a solution to resolve the issue, and will supposedly roll out a fix with the next monthly Windows update which is slated to be released on May 8, 2018.
The affected users have reported that the freezing issue is mainly affecting PCs that are backed with an Intel HD 620 or an Intel HD 630 graphics unit on a Kaby Lake series processor. Yang Gu from Intel Web Team's mentioned on a Chromium bug thread that he and Google Chrome's team are working together to fix the issue.
