Xiaomi Surge S2 SoC specs leaked; may launch at MWC 2018
Rumors have it, the Surge S2 chipset will debut in the Xiaomi Mi 6X, successor of Mi 5X.
Xiaomi had launched its first ever in-house chipset, the Surge S1, back in February 2017. The processor powered the company's Mi 5C smartphone, which remains to be an exclusive to the Chinese market. At that time, Xiaomi CEO had Lei Jun had confirmed that the company would launch more chipsets in the future. Well, it seems like we will get to see the Surge S2 SoC at the MWC 2018 in February.
A new rumor coming from the Chinese micro-blogging site Weibo has revealed this along with the detailed specs of the chipset. The successor of Surge S1 is said to take on Huawei's Kirin 960 SoC. This means unlike the Surge S1 of last year, the second-generation of Xiaomi's in-house chipset will be more powerful in terms of features and functionality.
Surge S2 SoC specifications
The Surge S2 is said to be manufactured on the 16nm process technology by TSMC, which will make it much more efficient over its predecessor. Similar to the most mid-range chipsets of these days, it is said be an octa-core processor. As per the leak, there are four high-performance ARM Cortex-A73 cores clocked at 2.2GHx, and four ARM Cortex-A53 cores clocked lower at 1.8 GHz.
For the graphics department, the chipset is speculated to include a G71MP8 GPU, a significant upgrade over the Mali-T860MP4 GPU present in the Surge S1. The leak further reveals, the Surge S2 SoC will carry support for LPDDR4 RAM and the latest UFS 2.1 storage standard.
As stated earlier, the Surge S2 will be as good as the Huawei's Hi-Silicon Kirin 960 processor, which is a flagship processor powering the Huawei flagships Mate 10 and Mate 10 Pro.
Smartphone that will be powered by Surge S2
Rumors have it, the Surge S2 chipset will debut in the Xiaomi Mi 6X, successor of Mi 5X. It is also believed that the Mi 6X will be known as Mi A2 in the global market. Even the Mi 5X was launched as Mi A1 under the Amazon One program in India. The Mi A2 is likely to feature a bezel-less display and a rear dual camera setup. That being said, it should be kept in mind, these are just rumors. We are yet to get any official conformation from the company itself.
