By Gizbot Bureau

When most people hear "MediaTek," they immediately think of smartphones. While it's true that over 2 billion devices worldwide are powered by MediaTek chips but it's not just smartphones. What if I told you that this perception is like seeing just the tip of an iceberg?

Beneath the surface lies a vast and diverse portfolio that spans smart TVs, wearables, voice assistants like Alexa, fitness equipment, car infotainment systems, laptops, Android tablets, and so on. MediaTek is no longer just a 'chipmaker for phones'-it's a powerhouse driving innovation across the consumer tech spectrum. It's high time we break the myth and face the truth i.e. MediaTek is more than just smartphones.

MediaTek: Beyond Smartphones, Shaping India's Tech Future

A Finger on the Pulse of Indian Consumers

India, with its unique blend of price sensitivity and aspiration for cutting-edge technology, represents one of the world's most complex consumer markets. MediaTek's strength lies in its ability to adapt to these dynamics. For instance, their success in the smartphone segment has come from delivering powerful processors at price points that cater to a wide demographic.

MediaTek commands a significant share in the smartphone chipset market globally, rivalling the likes of Qualcomm. In India, MediaTek's brand loyalty has grown exponentially in the last one decade, with consumers recognizing it as a symbol of performance and value. Perhaps that's the reason, as of the first half of 2024, the company led the sub-₹30,000 5G smartphone segment with a 64% market share, surpassing competitors like Qualcomm. But it doesn't stop
there.

The company has leveraged its expertise to tap into burgeoning categories like smart TVs, a segment where MediaTek chips power over 70% of the global market. With India becoming one of the fastest-growing smart TV markets, MediaTek's influence here is undeniable. Similarly, the rise in demand for wearables and fitness equipment-fuelled by India's growing fitness consciousness-has positioned MediaTek as a key enabler in this space.

MediaTek's Foray into Indian Automotive Technology

Another notable expansion of MediaTek in India is into the automotive sector with the introduction of the Dimensity Auto platform. This platform is designed to provide comprehensive solutions for in-vehicle infotainment (IVI), telematics, and advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), aiming to enhance the driving experience with cutting-edge technology.

As of 2024, the company's platform powers the IVI systems in the Tata Punch EV and the Škoda Slavia. In the Tata Punch EV, the MediaTek-powered 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system supports features such as 360-degree surround-view cameras and in-car gaming through the 'Arcade.ev' application suite.

Expanding its footprint in the two-wheeler industry, MediaTek has partnered with JioThings Limited, a subsidiary of Jio Platforms Limited, to develop "Made in India" smart digital clusters and smart modules tailored for the two-wheeler market. This collaboration aims to revolutionize the riding experience by integrating 4G connectivity and smart Android-based interfaces, providing riders with real-time information, navigation, and enhanced safety features.

Why MediaTek is Positioned to Dominate

MediaTek's growth strategy hinges on three pillars: diversity, innovation, and localization. By offering products across multiple categories, the company mitigates risks and ensures a consistent presence in consumers' lives. Their commitment to innovation-be it in AI-powered smart devices or efficient 5G solutions-ensures they remain ahead of the curve.

But perhaps most importantly, MediaTek understands Indian consumers. Whether it's designing energy-efficient chips for power-conscious users or enabling cost-effective 5G solutions, the brand resonates with India's diverse market needs.

A Future Written in Silicon

MediaTek's journey from being synonymous with smartphones to becoming a key player in IoT, 5G, and beyond is a testament to its adaptability and innovation. With a strong grasp of Indian sensibilities and a commitment to driving technological progress, the question isn't whether MediaTek will dominate the Indian consumer tech market-it's how soon.
