Iconia B1-A71: Acer Gears up to launch $99 Android Tablet Early Next Year
With tablets being the rage these days with huge demand for the devices from all and sundry, the price wars are just waiting to happen. Judging by the latest report from Wall Street Journal, Acer seems to be the one that will kick-start the price wars.
According to the report, Acer will soon launch Iconia B1 tablet running on Android platform for just $99(approx. Rs. 5,430). This is a major slash in prices as compared to existing tablets like Amazon Kindle Fire which sells for $159(approx. Rs. 8720).
However, Acer has planned to launch these lower priced tablets only in the emerging markets as of now. The tablets have been submitted to the FCC for clearance, so as to sell them in US market too.
This apparent price slash is said to have been made to fight the rumored low cost Android slate that Asus might have up its sleeve. Even though the low-priced devices from Asus are rumored to see the light sometime next year, a spokesperson from Asus has denied any such reports.
This new low cost device marks a turning point in Acer's strategy as the competitors such as Google nexus 10 are bringing down the prices as well. Sources reveal that Acer will not be limiting the price cuts only to the Android tablets.
The company is apparently in the process of developing Windows 8 tablets based on Intel which will be priced lower than the current versions. The Iconia W510 ranges from $549 (approx. Rs.30,111) onwards while Iconia W700 ranges from $800(approx. Rs.43,877) onwards.
With Acer starting the significant cut in tablet prices, it will just be a matter of time until other players in the field also follow suit.
