Lenovo IdeaPad Y500: 5 Best Contenders of the Windows 8 Notebook Launched In India
Windows 8 may not be setting the PC market on fire, but at least it is heating up some gains in market share. The latest flavor of Windows scored a market share of 2.26% in January 2013, which is a slow but steady rise from 1.72% in December 2012 and 1.09% in November 2012.
Reason being in the increase of market share of Windows 8 is due to its faster adoption rate by the PC manufacturers. Since the launch of the platform, several companies started launching their Windows 8 based devices in order to attract the consumers.
Also, the Windows 7 based devices were available for upgrade a cheaper price of Rs 699 for over eight months since the announcement of the platform.
Recently, Lenovo released a Windows 8 based notebook in India dubbed as IdeaPad Y500 at a price of Rs 64,290.
Speaking of specs, Lenovo IdeaPad Y500 has a 15.6-inch LED backlit widescreen HD display, third generation Intel Core i7 processor with NVIDIA graphics processor, 8GB RAM memory, 1TB HDD storage, a USB 2.0 and two USB 3.0 ports, HDMI port, a 6-in-1 card reader, Bluetooth 4.0, interchangeable DVD reader, JBL speakers and Dolby Home Theater v4 for audio.
Moreover, IdeaPad Y500 has a dual-layer backlit AccuType keyboard with a large touchpad.
By launching a Windows 8 laptop, Lenovo has stepped into a direct rivalry with the other companies that have also launched notebooks and ultrabooks recently into the market.

Dell Inspiron 15z
On Thursday, Dell launched an ultrabook dubbed as Inspiron 15z sports a 15.6 inch LED backlit display with HD resolution of 1366 x 768 pixels with Corning Glass protection, third generation Intel Core processor that can be configured better i3, i5 and i7, Nvidia GeForce GT630M GPU, 4GB/8GB RAM, USB 3.0, HDMI port, 8 in 1 memory card reader, in-built optical drive, 1MP webcam and few other interesting features.
Inspiron 15z is priced at Rs 41,999 for the starting model and it comes in both touch and non-touch variants. With a lesser price tag and similar specifications, the Dell offering could be a stiff competitor to Lenovo IdeaPad Y500.
Acer Aspire V5
Aspire V5, launched a few days back comes with a 15.6 inch LCD display with LED Backlight dipslay, Intel Core i3 processor at 1.4GHz, 4GB system memory, memory card slots, 500GB SATA HDD, 1.3MP webcam, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and a 2 cell battery.
Acer has priced the device at Rs 34,500 making it a reasonable offering with almost similar specifications with a significantly lesser price tag.
Asus UX32VD-R4010H
Asus UX32D features a 15.6 inch display, Windows 8, third generation Intel Core i7 processor with 1.9GHz speed, 4GB RAM, 500GB SSD, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, VGA webcam and a 6 cell battery.
The ultrabook is yet to be released into the India market and is estimated to come at a lesser price as compared to the IdeaPad Y500.
Sony VAIO E15129CN
The device houses a 15.5 inch WXGA LCD display with a resolution of 1366 x 768 pixels, third generation Intel Core i7 processor up to 3.2GHz, 4GB RAM, 750GB SATA, in-built optical drive, Windows 8, 1.3MP HD webcam, LAN, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and a 6 cell battery.
Priced at Rs 57,429, Sony VAIO E15129CN could be a stiff competitor to the Lenovo offering with its slightly lesser price tag and faster processor.
Toshiba Satellite C850-I2110
The Toshiba Satellite ultrabook sports a 15.6 HD Clear SuperView LED Backlit display with a resolution of 1366 x 768 pixels, third generation Intel Core i3 processor up to 2.4GHz, 4GB RAM, 500GB HDD, Windows 8, HD Webcam, multi-touch touchpad with gesture support and a 3 hours backup with the 6 cell battery.
Again the Toshiba Satellite C850-I2110 is still awaiting its release, but it can be a stiff competitor to the Lenovo IdeaPad Y500 with similar specifications.
