Sony announces new DPT-CP1 Digital Paper

The technology giant Sony has announced a new version of DPT-RP1; the DPT-CP1. Unlike the previous model, this comes in A5 size. Basically, it is also a giant slab of E Ink and works with a stylus for creating documents, PDF annotation and so on.

The 10.3-inch tablet comes with a screen resolution of 1404 x 1872 at 224 dots per inch. It comes with the capacity of 16 levels of grey scale. The DPT-CP1 features 16GB onboard storage for PDF files, which can be easily shared with iOS, Android, Windows, and Mac devices with the help of a common app.

The all-new tablet sports a sleek design with the thickness of 5.9mm and weighs around half of a pound. The company claims that the device is capable of running throughout a month on a single charge.

Like the previous 13.3-inch model, the DPT-CP1 is also made only for the Japanese market, and it isn't aiming to target the mainstream customers.

According to the company, the price will remain under 70,000 yen (approx $650) which will make it around $100 cheaper than the bigger sibling. It seems that the company will make the product available in early June.

Once Sony was one of the active participants of the e-reader revolution but they exited the space in 2013 and shuttered the Reader Store. In 2014 it decided to target the business users including business professionals and students with the launch of the Digital paper. It immediately sought a ton of media attention and many early adopters found a dedicated PDF editor. A few years later the company came up with the second gen with better and improved hardware.

The DPT-RP1 was launched in June last year, with a big 13.3-inch display along with the resolution of resolution from 1200 x 1600 dots to 1650 x 2200 dots. The screen used in the device was non-slip. The company notes that the entire device is roughly as thick as a stack of 30 pages of paper.

New DPT-CP1 will come with a smaller screen, and it will be lighter and affordable as compared with its bigger sibling.
