BSNL: Skype and Google Hangout Should Be Banned in India
Indian telecom company BSNL believes India should be a no entry zone for free video services like Skype and Google Hangout. Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited have appealed to the government to ban these free services.
According to a Business Line report , Free Voice over Internet Protocol or VoIP services offered by Skype and google might be exiled from the country, as the Union Government could already be considering to look into the legality of these services.
The reason for the plea is apparently because Indian telecom companies and Internet service providers have to pay a share of the revenue, they have earned via voice over Internet service, to the government. BSNL fells Free VoIP services such as Skype and Google Hangout getaway, by not paying anything.
BSNL currently offers video calling service at a fixed call rate of Rs 2.50 per minute. The service is currently available for South and Eastern zones. The question is will the people be happy to pay money to do something, they already do for free? Not to mention they have to buy the extra equipment to avail the service.
V Srinivasan, chief general manager, BSNL (AP) reportedly said free video-conferencing services such as skype are illegal, whereas BSNL's latest video telephony service is legal. If the notion is passed, it could become very inconvenient for users looking to Video-conference.
