Intel will release 100 self driving cars by the end of 2017
Intel will deploy self-driving vehicles to check their performance in real time. It has also acquired Mobileye for $15.3 billion which will build sensors and computer visions for vehicles.
Intel has announced that it will roll out 100 self-driving vehicles in Europe, Israel, and the US by the end of 2017. The vehicles will serve the purpose of demonstration vehicles for potential consumers as well as regulators. Intel also plans to have a real time check of its vehicles by deploying them for daily use.
Intel recently completed the acquisition of Mobileye for $15.3 billion. Mobileye will supposedly provide sensors and computer vision while Intel itself will work on enhancing the processing power and 5G and cloud communication system for the vehicles.
Senior vice president of Intel and future Mobileye executive, Amnon Shashua said: "Building cars and testing them in real-world conditions provides immediate feedback and will accelerate delivery of technologies and solutions for highly and fully autonomous vehicles."
She further explained, "Geographic diversity is very important as different regions have very diverse driving styles as well as different road conditions and signage. Our goal is to develop autonomous vehicle technology that can be deployed anywhere, which means we need to test and train the vehicles in varying locations."
"Delivering 100 test cars very quickly will demonstrate how this hybrid system can be adapted to meet customer needs," said Shashua. "Neither company could do this alone. Given resident skill-sets within the two companies, a stand-alone fleet of test vehicles is possible almost immediately."
Intel will use different brands and vehicle types to come up with the best possible components contributing to building up a car. Moreover, The cars will reach Level 4 autonomy, the second highest level in the SAE classification system.
