Nokia X Platform Ceased While Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella Confirms 18,000 job cuts

Reports were rife in the tech media world that Microsoft is going through a process of one of the biggest job cuts to date. Looks like, the rumors were true! As Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella has announced today via an email to employees that the Redmond-based tech titan is all set to layoff a total of 18,000 people within the next year.

At the same time, Stephen Elop, chief of Microsoft devices, also informed that the Nokia X Android project is now over. Relatively, the upcoming Nokia X designs and products will be transferred to Windows Phone devices unit. He in an official note, Elop also added that the projects will be transferred immediately without any delay, however at the same time the existing Nokia X products will remain untouched.

So it looks like, Nokia X2 is not going to be released in India anytime soon. But according to a listing on the Zauba Indian import/export website, the Nokia X2 DS with 4.3-inch display has been shipped to India, which meant that the handset could go official any time soon. So there might be a possibility that Microsoft could release this phone on retail shelves.

Stephen Elop stated, "In addition to the portfolio already planned, we plan to deliver additional lower-cost Lumia devices by shifting select future Nokia X designs and products to Windows Phone devices. We expect to make this shift immediately while continuing to sell and support existing Nokia X products."

On the other hand, here are the key excerpts of what Satya Nadella noted in his email:

"We will begin to reduce the size of our overall workforce by up to 18,000 jobs in the next year. Of that total..Nokia Devices and Services is expected to account for about 12,500 jobs, comprising both professional and factory workers."

"We are moving now to start reducing the first 13,000 positions, and the vast majority of employees whose jobs will be eliminated will be notified over the next six months."

"We will offer severance to all employees impacted by these changes, as well as job transition help in many locations, and everyone can expect to be treated with the respect they deserve for their contributions to this company."
