How to Transfer Ownership of Your Airtel Mobile Number in India: Step-by-Step Guide

Transferring an Airtel SIM card to someone else’s name isn’t something most of us do often—but when the need comes up, it’s important to get it done the right way. Whether you’re handing over a number to a family member, moving out of a corporate plan, or simply closing out an old account, there’s a proper process for shifting ownership.

It’s not something you can do online. Both parties—the current owner and the new one—need to go in person to an Airtel store, along with some documents.

When You Might Need a SIM Ownership Transfer

Some common situations where a transfer makes sense:

• You’re passing your number to a family member or friend
• You’re taking over a SIM that was under someone else’s name
• You’re leaving a job and want to move your corporate number to a personal account
• You’re helping a relative (e.g. a parent or spouse) manage their mobile account more easily

Note: If the original account holder has passed away, the process is different and involves legal documentation.

Step-by-Step: How to Transfer an Airtel Mobile Number

1. Visit the Nearest Airtel Store

This process can’t be done through the app or over a call. You’ll need to visit an official Airtel Relationship Centre or Airtel-authorized outlet. Both the current and new owner must be physically present.

2. Carry the Right Documents

Both people need to bring:

• A self-attested ID proof (like Aadhaar, PAN card, passport, or voter ID)
• A passport-sized photograph
• Address proof (if not included in the ID document)

If it's a corporate number being transferred to an individual, an NOC (No Objection Certificate) on the company’s letterhead is required.

3. Fill Out the Transfer Form

At the store, you’ll both need to fill out a Customer Agreement Form (CAF). This is the standard KYC procedure. You'll be asked to:

• Provide ID and address proof
• Sign consent to the ownership change
• Undergo biometric verification (usually Aadhaar-based)

The new owner will also need to choose whether to keep the number as prepaid or postpaid.

4. Clear Any Pending Dues

If the number is postpaid, the existing owner must clear all outstanding bills before the transfer can go through. Airtel won’t process the handover if dues are left unpaid.

5. Wait for Activation

Once the paperwork is submitted and verified, the transfer usually takes 24 to 48 hours to complete. The number will stay active during this time, but some features like plan changes may be temporarily restricted.

A new SIM may be issued in the new owner’s name, or they may continue using the existing one depending on the scenario.

A Few Things to Keep in Mind

• No remote transfers: You can’t transfer SIM ownership online, over email, or via customer care.
• No transfer without consent: The current owner must be present to authorize the handover.
• Number lock-in: After the transfer, you usually can’t port the number to another carrier for 90 days.
• Keep a copy of the documents: It’s good to hold onto a copy of the filled CAF and ID proofs used, just in case.

What If the Original Owner Is Deceased?

If the person whose name is on the SIM has passed away, the legal heir or family member will need to provide:

• Death certificate
• Succession certificate or legal heir certificate
• ID and address proof of the new owner
