Qualcomm signs 3G/4G patent licencing deal with Qiku, Haier and Tianyu
Qualcomm has announced that they have signed a 3G/4G Patent License Agreement with Qiku, Haier and Tianyu. The license is however limited to China.
For those unaware the three partners with whom Qualcomm signed the patent license are dark-horses in the Chinese market. Thanks to the agreement these three brands can now use Qualcomm's Royalty-Bearing patent license to develop, manufacture and sell 3G WCDMA and CDMA2000 band (including EV-DO) and 4G LTE (GSM, TD-SCDMA and LTE-TDD band) smartphone in China.

Just to recall Qiku is a joint venture between Chinese smartphone brand Coolpad and software company Qihoo. The newly incepted brand have in fact entered India last month with the launch of the Qiku Q Terra 808.
"Qiku is introducing a new range of smartphones that deliver the high performance consumers want with the security features and long battery life they need. As we launch our devices in China, this license from Qualcomm will enable us to compete and deliver a range of 3G and 4G products that blend top hardware with the finest software," said Mr. Zhu Fanghao, president of Qiku.
Speaking on the agreement Cao Teng, General Manager, Qingdao Haier Telecom Co. Ltd stated, "Haier is focused on creating innovative technologies, products and services that will help shape the future, as well as enhance the lives of our customers. The licensing agreement with Qualcomm supports our vision by helping us to deliver products embedded with leading 3G and 4G connectivity to provide the same convenient and personalized connected experience that consumers have come to expect from a smartphone."

For those unaware these licensing deals are the areas which reaps a major share of the profit for the chipset marker. Financial terms of the license are not known as of yet.
