TRAI proposes to enhance roll of MNP
Presently, there is no mechanism available with the RO to verify the content and status of the expiry date of UPC.
With an aim to curb rejection of mobile number portability (MNP), Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) proposed to enhance roll of MNP clearing house which will have all the details of subscribers required for completion of the process.
TRAI had issued the telecommunication MNP regulations in September 2009 laying down the basic business process framework for implementation of MNP in the country
The telecom regulator said, rejection of porting requests creates dissatisfaction and frustration among subscribers and it is observed that grounds of rejection dependent on Unique Porting Code (UPC), namely 'UPC Mismatch' and 'invalid/expired UPC', jointly contribute around 40 percent of the total rejection of porting requests.
Presently, there is no mechanism available with the RO to verify the content and status of the expiry date of UPC. Therefore, it is proposed that a process may be added to the existing MNP process wherein content of UPC and date of validity of UPC along with the mobile number is shared by donor operator with respective MNP Clearing House (MCH)," the telecom regulator said in the draft paper.
Meanwhile, Trai data says that a total of 5.88 million requests were received for Mobile Number Portability (MNP), during the month of April-17.
The data says that with this, the cumulative MNP requests increased from 283.09 million at the end of May-17 to 288.97 million at the end of June-17, since the implementation of MNP. TRAI has divided the MNP service into two zones in India- Zone-I, and Zone-II.
In MNP Zone-I (Northern and Western India), the highest number of requests till date have been received in Rajasthan (about 24.34 million) followed by Gujarat (about 20.64 million).
In MNP Zone-II (Southern and Eastern India), the highest number of requests till date have been received in Karnataka (about 31.46 million)followed by Andhra Pradesh (about 26.01 million).
