Adios fitness bands; health tracking has a new face

Fitness trackers have become a very common tool for keeping a tab on your daily routine while encouraging you to get in shape at the same time. But that's about to change. VPS Global has launched a new pair of smart glasses dubbed Level that does the same job as a fitness band, but with more style.

The smart glasses can track user's daily activities such as steps, distance traveled and calories burned. The glasses do not sport a special screen to display the information like the Google Glass or the Vuzix Blade. Instead, it shows the report of user's daily data on a dedicated smartphone app.

"Because Level is centered on your body's axis, our engineers have designed a step count model that accurately tracks purposeful steps and eliminates non-step movements," the company explains.

The activity trackers are housed under the left arm of the frame with a Micro-USB port for charging the device. The company also claims that the battery gets fully charged in 30 minutes and lasts up to 5 days depending on the usage.

Customers who buy the Level can sync their data with VSP Global's 'Eyes if Hope' initiative to gain points for achieving their daily goals. Once a user reaches 50 points, an eye examination and eyewear goes to someone in need. The users also have the liberty to choose the group receiving the donations: Children, elderly, veterans, or the homeless.

"Each [is] designed by The Shop and produced in Italy through VSP Global's eyewear division, Marchon," the company adds. "The designs feature hand-polished cellulose acetate, stainless steel accents, and injection-molded temples. Each frame is available in four colors, including black, classic tortoise, slate and grey tortoise."

There are three unisex versions of Level, one of which is Minsky need after artificial intelligence researcher Marvin Minsky. Other two are named on World War II radio guidance system designer Hedy Lamarr, and futurist and mechanical engineer Nikola Tesla.

The smart glasses will be rolled out in March for $270 in addition to the cost of your prescription lenses. It will be first available in Sacramento, California followed by five other markets in April: Seattle, Denver, Minneapolis, Washington, D.C, and Portland, Oregon. Further expansion will depend on the consumer demand and feedback.
