Google has made passkeys the default option for personal Google Accounts in response to customer feedback, in order to streamline the sign-in process and improve security.
Users will now be prompted to generate and utilise passkeys upon logging in, facilitating future access to their accounts.
In Google Account settings, the "Skip password when possible" option will also be activated by default.
Passkeys can be accessed through fingerprint, face scan, or PIN, and provide a 40% quicker sign-in experience than regular passwords.
Users can still use passwords if they choose by disabling "Skip password when possible."
Passkeys have been used successfully in major apps such as YouTube, Search, and Maps since their first release.
Google intends to increase the use of passkeys across multiple online accounts and urges the industry to move to passkeys, with the ultimate objective of making passwords obsolete.
