Belkin Boost Up wireless charging pad overview
BOOST UP Wireless charging pad is an entry-level 5W wireless charging pad for Qi-enabled smart devices such as smartphones and tablets.
Wireless charging has been around for a while now; however, the technology has arguably failed to gain widespread adoption, especially in the Indian market. One reason can simply be the fact that Indian smartphone market mostly consists of budget and mid-range handsets. Whereas wireless charging is associated with high-end devices that boast glass rear panels and support some wireless charging standards.
Qi technology is one such wireless charging standard which is used by some of the industry's leading smartphone manufacturers, including Apple and Samsung. Apple iPhone X, Samsung Galaxy S9, Galaxy S9+, and a number of other smartphones, and even smartwatches use Qi-certified transmitting coils to deliver charge to your phone wirelessly.
If you have recently purchased any of the flagship handsets from Apple or Samsung, and want to give wireless charging a try, you can consider Belkin Boost Up wireless charging pad. Priced at Rs. 2,999, Belkin's Boost Up wireless charging pad is available for purchase at Reliance Digital Stores, Amazon.in, and Imagine Stores. We used the same with Samsung Galaxy S9+ to find out how effective and useful is a wireless charging pad in our everyday life. Here's what we found out.
Belkin Boost Up Wireless Charging Pad (5W) Features
Qi-certified charger delivers charge to your phone wirelessly
5W/1-amp output for fast charging
Portable design
Soft charging pad to prevent scratching and slipping
Compatible with most lightweight cases up to 3mm
Works with any Qi-enabled devices such as smartphones and tablets
Compatibility
Belkin Boost Up wireless charging pad is compatible with a number of devices. The list includes Galaxy Note 8, Galaxy S8, Galaxy S8+, Galaxy S9, Galaxy S9+, iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, and other Qi-enabled devices.
What's in the package?
Belkin Boost Up wireless charging pad ships with a 1.8m Micro-USB to USB-A cable. Surprisingly, there's no AC adapter included in the package and you would need a 2A or above wall charger to get it started.
Portable and clean design
Belkin has kept the design to minimal and the Boost Up wireless charging pad looks quite clean and elegant. It's also very lightweight and portable. The flat disc pad has a matte dark grey surface that has a high-friction layer to prevent the smartphone from slipping.
The wireless charging pad features a LED light that blinks up when a compatible device is placed appropriately and is being charged wirelessly.
Belkin Boost Up Performance
The whole process of charging your device with a wireless charging pad is quite simple and does not ask for any efforts. You just need to place the pad on a flat surface and connect it to a power source. Place your device on it and see the magic of wireless charging technology.
Make sure you place your phone roughly centered on the pad. I did not take care of it a couple of times and found that the phone wasn't charging. I also noticed that the phone and the pad got slightly warm, but it was nothing alarming. The Belkin pad also worked fine with the silicon protective case on my phone; however, I did not have the chance to try the same with any metal protective case.
The charging speed on the Belkin wireless charging pad seemed a bit tricky. The Galaxy S9+ took a considerable time to reach the 100% mark during the wireless charging process. The charging speed was not as fast as with the standard charger you get in Galaxy S9+ box even though I used the same charging adaptor. I charged the phone without the protective case, but it still did not help to speed up the charging process.
Is wireless charging Future?
Wireless charging is indeed the future but I found the whole process restricted at present. First of all, you are still using a cable to power up the charging pad. You cannot use the device to click a picture or for many other purposes, as the phone needs to be constantly placed on the pad. This is due to the nature of the wireless charging technology that works on electromagnetic induction.
The wireless charging pads house an induction coil that creates an alternating electromagnetic field. The energy is then transferred from the pad to the glass back of the phone via the receiver coil placed inside the phone. The coil converts the transferred energy into electricity to fuel up the battery cell in the device. Therefore, you don't need to plug in the device with a cable. You can just lay your phone or oQi-enabledabled device onto the charging pad when the battery level decreases.
Verdict
Belkin Boost Up is a good accessory if you want to test the wireless charging technology in action. However, it's just not very useful if you are in a hurry and want to give a quick boost to your phone's battery cell. The conventional charger still seems like the right option in such cases.
