Air India Will Allow Passengers to Track Their Luggage Using Apple AirTags: Here’s How it Works
Air India has introduced Apple AirTag integration into its baggage-tracking system and mobile app. This allows passengers with iPhone, iPad, or Mac devices to securely monitor their checked luggage. The airline noted that it is the first in Asia to provide this feature. Passengers can track their bags in real-time through the "My Trips" section of the mobile app, the "Track My Bags" tab on the website, or by scanning the barcode on their baggage receipt.
Dr. Satya Ramaswamy, Chief Digital & Technology Officer at Air India, commented on this development: "At Air India, we continue to innovate and introduce cutting-edge digital capabilities as part of our customer-centric approach. With this launch, we are excited to offer our guests an advanced option to help locate their baggage if it does not arrive at the destination on schedule. We are confident that our guests will find the baggage location capability, enabled by Apple's AirTag and Share Item Location feature combined with Air India's real-time baggage-tracking system on its website and mobile app, extremely helpful."

Apple Devices Compatibility
The new feature requires Apple devices running iOS 18.2, iPadOS 18.2, or macOS 15.2 or later versions. This ensures compatibility for users who wish to utilise this tracking service effectively. The airline handles over 100 million baggage items each year, with 99.6% arriving on time with passengers.
Privacy and Security
Air India assures that passenger privacy is a top priority. Location sharing stops automatically when the bag is recovered or after seven days. Passengers can also manually disable it anytime. This integration aims to enhance customer experience by providing a reliable solution for tracking delayed luggage.
Baggage Recovery Process
If a bag equipped with an AirTag doesn't arrive at its destination, passengers should report it at Air India's Baggage Counter. Staff will assist in filing a Property Irregularity Report (PIR). Passengers then generate a "Share Item Location" link in Apple's "Find My" app and provide it to Air India via their Customer Support Portal.
To share the location link through the mobile app, visit the "Customer Support Portal", select "Baggage", then "Lost and Found Check-in Baggage", and add the link. On the website, go to the Customer Support Portal, choose "Lost and Found Check-in Baggage", and submit the link along with the PIR number.
Tracking Status Updates
After submitting details, passengers receive an acknowledgment email from Air India containing a link to track their baggage status. If within airport premises, authorized airport teams use shared AirTag data to locate bags promptly.
This integration aims to expedite recovery for delayed luggage due to airport issues or missed flights. By leveraging technology like Apple's AirTag alongside its existing systems, Air India enhances its service offerings for travellers.
