WWDC 2025: AirPods Get Smarter with Studio Audio and Camera Remote Features
At WWDC 2025, Apple unveiled a new suite of features aimed at making AirPods more than just an audio accessory. With the upcoming iOS 26, iPadOS 26, and macOS Tahoe updates arriving this fall, select AirPods models will gain studio-quality recording capabilities and remote camera controls—features designed with content creators and remote workers in mind.
These updates apply to the newly announced AirPods 4, AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation (ANC), and the existing AirPods Pro 2.

AirPods Become a Mobile Studio for Creators
The biggest headline feature is the ability to record studio-quality audio directly from your AirPods. Thanks to a combination of the H2 chip, beamforming microphones, and Apple's computational audio, creators can now capture clear, textured vocals even in challenging environments.
Whether you're a podcaster walking through a noisy street, a journalist recording interviews on the go, or a musician capturing a vocal riff before it slips your mind, the new recording tools promise a noticeable leap in flexibility.
These capabilities extend across native Apple apps like Voice Memos, FaceTime, and Messages, as well as third-party apps such as Webex and other CallKit-supported platforms.
Record Video From Afar with a Tap
The second feature—camera remote control—might fly under the radar but could become an essential tool for creators who work solo. With a press and hold of the AirPods stem, users can trigger the iPhone or iPad camera to start or stop a recording or take a photo.
This comes in handy for anyone recording themselves while dancing, performing, or vlogging. No need to fumble with timers or shout at Siri from across the room. The AirPods essentially act as a subtle, wearable camera trigger.
This functionality works not only with Apple’s Camera app but also with third-party camera apps that integrate with the system APIs, expanding the use case for influencers, educators, and fitness instructors alike.
Better Voice Clarity Across the Board
While the highlight updates are geared toward creators, the enhanced voice quality improvements also benefit everyday users. From FaceTime calls to dictation in Messages and even Zoom or Webex meetings, voice transmission will now have better fidelity, tone, and natural clarity.
Availability and Compatibility
The new features are rolling out initially to developers today through the Apple Developer Program. A public beta will follow next month via the Apple Beta Software Program. For everyone else, the update will arrive as a free firmware upgrade later this year.
It’s important to note that these features are exclusive to the latest AirPods 4, AirPods 4 with ANC, and AirPods Pro 2, and they require the upcoming versions of iOS, iPadOS, or macOS. Availability may also vary depending on regional regulations and language support.
