Apple Will Begin AirPods Production in India in April: Expanding its Manufacturing Footprint in the Country
In 2023, Apple began exporting an AirPods component from India to China and Vietnam. Starting in April, production of AirPods at the Foxconn facility in Hyderabad will commence for export purposes. This development is part of Apple's strategy to expand its manufacturing footprint in India, as reported by PTI and IANS.
Apple's CEO Tim Cook highlighted India's dual role in manufacturing during an earnings call. He stated that production in India serves both domestic and export markets. "Our business needs certain economies of scale for it to make sense to manufacture in the country," he explained, emphasizing the importance of scale for efficient operations.

India's Role in Apple's Supply Chain
The expansion is not limited to AirPods alone. Reports suggest that Foxconn is also preparing to produce Beats headphones in India. This move further strengthens India's position within Apple's audio product supply chain. Although current production is intended for export, local sales might occur, potentially affecting pricing and availability domestically.
Apple's iPhone exports from India have reached unprecedented levels, hitting Rs 1 lakh crore within the first ten months of FY25. This achievement highlights India's growing significance as a manufacturing hub for Apple. The surge is attributed to government incentives and a skilled workforce that supports Apple's production goals.
Future Innovations and Software Updates
Apple plans to introduce a live-translation feature for AirPods with a significant software update expected later this year. This update will coincide with the launch of iOS 19, showcasing Apple's commitment to enhancing user experience through technological advancements.
The company's diverse production strategy aligns with global trends where companies aim to reduce supply chain risks while leveraging India's expanding manufacturing capabilities. This approach reflects a broader industry movement towards diversifying production locations.
India's growing role in Apple's ecosystem underscores its potential as a key player in global manufacturing networks. As Apple continues to invest in Indian facilities, the country's influence on technology supply chains is likely to increase further.
