Samsung P9 and P7 Portable SSDs Launched In India: Check Price, Specifications, Features

Samsung has brought its P9 and P7 portable SSDs to India, marking its first move to USB4 external storage in the country. The drives will be available from the first week of September, with prices starting at Rs 27,839. The launch is aimed at creators, gamers and professionals who need faster portable storage for large files.

The Samsung P9 is the higher-end model, with claimed sequential read speeds of up to 4,000MB/s and write speeds of up to 3,800MB/s. That makes it a major step up from Samsung’s earlier T9 portable SSD, which used USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 and topped out at around 2,000MB/s.

Samsung P9 and P7 Prices in India

The P9 is priced at Rs 32,639 for 1TB, Rs 62,399 for 2TB, Rs 129,599 for 4TB and Rs 259,199 for 8TB. The P7 starts at Rs 27,839 for 1TB, followed by Rs 52,799 for 2TB, Rs 110,399 for 4TB and Rs 219,839 for 8TB.

Samsung says storage capacity options may vary by market. In India, the pricing clearly places these drives in the premium segment, especially the 8TB P9, which costs more than many mainstream laptops.

Why USB4 Matters for Portable SSDs

The biggest change is USB4 support, which gives compatible laptops, desktops and other devices much higher bandwidth than older USB standards. For users moving RAW photos, high-resolution videos or large game libraries, that can reduce waiting time significantly, provided the host device also supports the required speeds.

Samsung is positioning the P9 for demanding production workflows. The company says the 8TB P9 is the world’s first USB4 portable SSD rated at 4,000MB/s and claims its sustained write performance can support 12K direct recording. The drive also received a CES 2026 Innovation Award.

The P7 is aimed at users who want a fast portable SSD for broader everyday use. Samsung says it works with laptops, desktops, phones, gaming consoles and cameras. It has also passed 2-metre drop testing, along with shock and vibration tests.

The two drives were showcased at Gamescom 2026 in Cologne, ahead of their global rollout from August 31. For Indian buyers, the main question will be device compatibility and workload. USB4 brings clear speed gains, but the benefits will matter most to users handling very large files regularly.
