Karnataka Bans Social Media For Kids Under 16 — A First For Any Indian State
Karnataka has announced a new restriction that will prevent children under the age of 16 from using social media platforms. The decision was shared by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah during the state’s budget speech on Friday.

With this move, Karnataka becomes the first state in India to introduce a ban specifically targeting social media access for younger users.
During the address, Siddaramaiah said the step is aimed at reducing the potential impact smartphones and online platforms are having on children.
According to the chief minister, the restriction is intended to help limit the adverse effects linked to rising mobile phone use among younger age groups.
Growing Concerns Around Digital Habits
The decision comes at a time when concerns about children’s online habits are becoming more visible.
Excessive screen time and continuous engagement with social platforms are often linked to issues such as reduced academic focus, behavioural changes and mental health challenges. Authorities have also raised concerns about younger users encountering harmful content or risky online communities.
These discussions have been shaping policy conversations in several regions as governments look for ways to address the influence of digital platforms on minors.
Proposal Was Being Discussed Earlier
The idea of restricting social media access for children had already been under discussion within the state government.
Last month, Siddaramaiah brought up the issue during a meeting with vice chancellors from government universities. During that discussion, he sought feedback on whether such restrictions were practical and what kind of impact they might have.
Those conversations appear to have contributed to the state’s decision to move ahead with the ban.
Similar Discussions Happening Elsewhere
Karnataka’s decision also reflects a broader global debate about regulating social media use among younger users.
Australia has already introduced rules preventing users under 16 from accessing platforms such as Instagram, TikTok, Snapchat, YouTube and X.
In India, Andhra Pradesh has also been considering similar restrictions, though no final decision has been announced so far.
National Conversations Around Age-Based Regulation
At the national level, discussions around age-based rules for digital platforms are also gaining traction.
Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw recently said many countries are moving toward stronger safeguards for minors online. Speaking at the AI Impact Summit 2026, he noted that governments and technology companies are currently discussing how age restrictions and other protections could be implemented.
The government is also examining issues such as deepfakes and manipulated media, which officials say are becoming a growing challenge across online platforms.
