Google Starts Rolling Out New Android 16 Update: AI Notification Summaries, Customisation Options, and More

Google has started rolling out the Android 16 QPR2 (Quarterly Platform Release 2) update, bringing a new wave of AI-powered features for select Pixel smartphones.

The new update focuses on notifications, customisation and family safety, with many changes designed to cut distractions and give users faster access to useful information. Here's everything that's new.

AI Notification Summaries

One major addition in Android 16 is AI-powered notification summaries, which condense long messages and group chats into brief highlights. A new notification organiser also steps in, automatically sorting and muting lower-priority alerts such as promotions, news updates and social notifications, so key messages stay visible.

New Customisation Options

The Android 16 QPR2 update expands visual customisation tools, letting users shape the interface more closely to personal style. Custom icon shapes can alter the look of app shortcuts on the home screen. Themed icons then align designs across apps, giving a cleaner and more consistent appearance.

Dark theme behaviour also changes with Android 16 QPR2 update. An expanded option now forces darker colours on most light-themed apps, including many that lack their own dark modes. This is aimed at reducing eye strain in low light and may help conserve battery power.

New Parental Controls

Families gain a new Parental Controls section within Android Settings with the Android 16 QPR2 update. This central hub combines on-device tools and Google Family Link access. A simple PIN protects these controls, stopping children from changing limits on their own without permission.

Using the Parental Controls menu, parents can cap total daily screen time, schedule downtime that locks the device at night, restrict or block specific apps, and grant extra minutes when limits expire. The same area links directly to Google Family Link for features like School Time, purchase approvals and location alerts.
