Android Gets Tap to Share: How Google’s New Quick Share Feature Works

Google has officially launched "Tap to Share," a proximity-based transfer feature for Android. This utility simplifies sharing contacts, photos, and videos by bringing two compatible mobile phones together. It essentially offers an Android equivalent to Apple's NameDrop feature.

The option works via Google's Quick Share platform. To exchange contact cards, users must be on their home screens and bring their devices close. This initiates an instant, two-way exchange. Users can customise which contact details they want to share.

How to Share Photos and Media

For sharing photos and videos, the process is slightly different to prevent accidental transfers. Users must first open the default system Share Sheet in any compatible media app. They can then tap the devices together to start the high-speed file transfer.

Security is built directly into this design. Users can configure the settings to only receive contact cards without sharing their own details. Users can also disable the feature fully. This is useful for those who prefer manual sharing methods.

Supported Devices and Timeline

The update is currently rolling out to Google Pixel 6 and newer models. It is also heading to Samsung's foldables soon. This includes the Galaxy Z Fold8, Fold8 Ultra, and Galaxy Z Flip8. Google promises to expand compatibility to more Android brands before the end of the year.

To turn the service off, navigate to the settings app on your device. From there, go to the Google menu and select Quick Share. You can easily toggle off Tap to Share to manage your device's visibility. This helps prevent unwanted sharing requests from random nearby phones.

This rollout marks a significant step forward for the Android file-sharing ecosystem. By upgrading Quick Share, Google has streamlined offline media transfers. It makes physical device communication highly intuitive. This matches the seamless connectivity long enjoyed by rival iOS users.
