Apple Gives Siri a Major AI Upgrade with Free ChatGPT at WWDC 2024

Apple has announced several AI-powered updates for its Siri virtual assistant. These new features, unveiled during Apple's WWDC event on June 10, include an updated design, enhanced speech understanding, and integration with OpenAI's ChatGPT model.

Siri will now have a glowing multi-colored border on the screen, making it more prominent. The assistant can also better understand users even when they stumble over words. Siri will maintain the context of conversations between requests, enhancing user interactions.

Some of these updates are powered by Apple Intelligence, the company's new privacy-focused personal intelligence system. Siri will be able to control actions within apps, such as retrieving information from emails or locating a driver's license image on the device to fill out forms.

Apple's integration with ChatGPT means Siri can now "tap into ChatGPT's expertise" for tasks like recipe advice. Siri will request user approval before using ChatGPT to complete a task, and the information will be displayed directly on the device screen.

Users can now type their questions to Siri by double-tapping on the bottom of the screen. They can continue interactions via both typing and voice, offering greater flexibility in how they use the assistant.

Availability and Future Plans

The new Siri features, powered by Apple Intelligence, will be available in beta for iOS 18 this fall in the US. The ChatGPT integration is expected to be released later this year, following months of reports and rumors about Apple's AI plans.

Siri was first introduced on the iPhone 4S in 2011 and was noted for its ability to respond to voice commands. However, its lack of significant improvements over the years has left it behind other AI tools like OpenAI's ChatGPT and Google's Gemini.
