Apple Intelligence Features Delayed in Europe due to EU Regulations: Could Launch in 2025
Apple revealed on Friday that three significant features -Apple Intelligence, iPhone Mirroring to macOS Sequoia, and SharePlay Screen Sharing-will be unavailable in the European Union when iOS 18 and macOS Sequoia launch this autumn.
This decision stems from regulatory concerns under the Digital Markets Act (DMA), according to Bloomberg. These features are also withheld due to DMA requirements.

Regulatory Concerns and User Privacy
Apple stated that these features are impacted because the DMA's interoperability requirements could jeopardize "user privacy" and "data security." The DMA, enacted in 2023, aims to prevent major tech firms from acting as "gatekeepers" and mandates basic functionalities to work across competing devices and ecosystems.
Currently, Apple is in discussions with the EU to find a way to offer these features while ensuring user safety. However, this means consumers in the EU, including those in France, Germany, Spain, and Italy, will not have access to these new technologies for now.
The specific compliance challenges under the DMA are not fully defined yet. Apple's decision could lead to frustration among EU consumers and increased regulatory scrutiny. An EU release date for these features has not been announced, and it remains unclear how long it will take Apple to comply with the DMA to introduce them in the EU.
Global Rollout of Apple Intelligence
Outside the EU, Apple Intelligence will be available this autumn for U.S. English devices with iOS 18. Future updates will introduce more features like enhanced Siri capabilities. Mac iPhone Mirroring will arrive later this year with an update to macOS Sequoia, and SharePlay Screen Sharing will be included in the initial iOS 18 release.
However, Apple Intelligence faces global challenges, including in China where OpenAI's ChatGPT is banned. Apple is considering partnerships with companies such as Baidu Inc. and Alibaba Group Holding Ltd.
The iPhone Mirroring feature allows users to display their iPhone screen on a Mac, showcasing live interactive content and notifications. SharePlay Screen Sharing, an enhancement to FaceTime's screen-sharing capability, enables users to control a friend's device. As Apple continues its discussions with the EU, consumers worldwide await further updates on when these innovative features will become available in their regions.
