Apple iOS 18 Introduced at WWDC 2024: Game Mode, Satellite Messaging, and More

Apple has officially released its iOS 18 update at its annual developer conference. Apple introduced iOS 18 at its WWDC keynote, with software VP Craig Federighi unveiling numerous updates. A key highlight is the customizable home screen, now allowing users to place app icons freely.

iOS 18 New Features

Additionally, in dark mode, app icons will darken for eye comfort, and a new theme engine will let users apply a chosen color across the app grid. The Control Center has been revamped to offer multiple pages of controls and toggles.

Media and smart home controls are now prominently placed, and third-party apps can integrate with the Control Center. iOS 18 also allows users to replace default camera and flashlight icons on the lock screen with preferred Control Center toggles.

Privacy enhancements include requiring authentication for any app and the ability to hide apps until verified. Users can also control which contacts third-party apps can access. The Messages app now supports any emoji in Tapback responses and offers new formatting options.

Satellite Communication, Game Mode, and More!

Notably, satellite communication for messaging is now available, and RCS support promises higher-quality image and video sharing with Android devices. The built-in Mail app now features better categorization, similar to Gmail's automatic sorting for transactions, updates, and promotions. A new Game Mode minimizes background activity for optimal performance with gamepads or AirPods.

Additionally, the Photos app has been significantly revamped to manage large libraries better, introducing face sorting, the ability to pin collections, and improved automatic grouping of people and pets. Apple hinted at new AI-powered features but stated that these would be covered in a later section of the keynote, as they span multiple platforms.
