Carl Pei Offers First Look at Nothing OS 3.0 With Customizable Lock Screen, Fresh Dot Animations
Exciting news for Nothing phone users! The company is prepping its next major software update, Nothing OS 3.0, and CEO Carl Pei has been teasing some of its features ahead of the official launch in September 2024. Here's a breakdown of what we know so far:
Lock Screen Customization
The most noticeable change appears to be a complete overhaul of the lock screen experience. othing OS 3.0 empowers users to personalize their lock screen with three distinct styles:

- Default: This option caters to users who prefer a clean and minimalistic look. It retains the standard clock, date, and day display.
- Clock + Widgets: This style caters to those who want more functionality at a glance. It offers a playful twist with a dotted clock display alongside practical features like a weather widget, a contact widget for quick access to a favorite person, and a shortcut for frequently used actions.
- Expanded Widget Area: This option takes things a step further by building upon the Clock + Widgets style. It provides users with larger tiles for displaying additional information and allows for even deeper customization of the lock screen experience.
Interactive Elements

Carl Pei also offered a glimpse into the world of interactive elements within Nothing OS 3.0. He showcased a new feature called "interactive dot animations." While their specific application remains unclear, these animations are likely to be used within the Quick Settings panel. The animations reportedly have three distinct layers, suggesting a visually appealing and potentially user-responsive experience.
More to Come?
While Pei hasn't revealed everything, rumors suggest that Nothing OS 3.0 might also include:
- A brand new native gallery app, potentially offering a more streamlined and user-friendly way to manage photos.
- An improved community app, fostering a more engaging platform for Nothing users to connect and share experiences.
- Enhancements to the Glyph interface, a signature Nothing feature that utilizes transparent back panels with customizable LED lighting patterns. These enhancements could involve a combination of hardware and software improvements for a more seamless user experience.
Nothing Phone 3 Delayed
Although the Nothing Phone 3 has been delayed until 2025 (which is disappointing), the upcoming Nothing OS 3.0 update looks to be promising. As an owner of the Nothing Phone (1), I am excited for this update. September 2024 can't come soon enough!
