Google Rolls Out Gemini 1.5 Flash Update With Faster Responses and Broader Context

Google recently announced a significant update to its AI engine, Gemini, now running on the 1.5 Flash language model. This update focuses on speed, efficiency, and enhanced user experiences.

The new model expands the context window from 8K to 32K tokens, enabling more complex and nuanced conversations. Users can expect improved quality and accuracy in responses.

Gemini's European Expansion

The update also brings Gemini to Google Messages across Europe, adding support for new languages like French, Polish, and Spanish. With this rollout, Gemini now spans 230 countries and territories.

Initially introduced at Google I/O in May 2024, Gemini 1.5 Flash quickly became available to paying customers. Now, the free version also benefits from these advancements, making it accessible to a broader audience.

Enhanced Features for Users

File Upload Capability: Users can upload files from Google Drive or their devices, a feature currently available only on Gemini Advanced. Amar Subramanya, VP of Engineering, indicated this functionality would be added to the free tier soon. This capability allows users to upload documents for analysis, creating practice questions, or generating insights and visualizations.

Related Content and Fact-Checking: Google has integrated related content links for fact-seeking prompts within Gemini, aiming to reduce hallucinations and enhance information exploration. This feature uses Google Search to verify responses, highlighting corroborated or contradicted statements on the web. Users can click on chips at the end of paragraphs to see related websites and, if applicable, relevant Gmail information.

Gemini for Teens

Google is expanding Gemini's access for teenagers globally, available in over 40 languages. Teens who meet the age requirement to manage their own Google Accounts can use Gemini for educational and creative purposes.

This rollout includes additional policies and safeguards, developed in partnership with child safety and development experts. The teen-specific onboarding process and AI literacy guide aim to meet the unique needs of teens and families.

Availability

The ability to chat with Gemini in Google Messages is rolling out to the European Economic Area (EEA), UK, and Switzerland, with the Gemini mobile app expanding to more countries.
