How Xbox Mode Works on Windows 11 PC? Check Features and Availability

Microsoft is starting a gradual rollout of "Xbox mode" to Windows 11 PCs, bringing a console-style full-screen interface to desktops, laptops and tablets in selected regions. The feature creates a focused gaming space on standard hardware, placing installed titles and recent games at the centre while temporarily hiding regular desktop elements.

The company is releasing the update to a small group of users first, then expanding distribution over several weeks. This phased launch lets Microsoft track performance and stability on different PC configurations before the feature reaches a wider Windows 11 audience.

How Xbox Mode Works on Windows 11 PC?

Xbox Mode Interface and Controller Features on Windows 11 PCs

"Xbox mode" is built directly into Windows 11 and is designed around controller use. The interface allows players to browse menus, select games and start sessions using a standard gamepad, reducing the need for mouse and keyboard input when playing from a sofa or at a distance from the screen.

The mode acts as a dedicated gaming hub. It gathers installed titles from major PC stores into one place and also surfaces the full Xbox Game Pass catalogue for subscribers. Recent games appear prominently, helping players jump back into active sessions quickly without returning to the traditional Windows desktop.

Microsoft first tested the concept on Windows-based gaming handhelds, where it was called "full screen experience." Feedback from people using these portable devices influenced interface layout, navigation behaviour and performance priorities. The company says those insights guided how "Xbox mode" should work on larger screens and more varied PC hardware.

The wider release supports Microsoft’s aim to present a more consistent Xbox-style look across consoles, handhelds and Windows 11 PCs. At the same time, users can exit the full-screen interface whenever needed and return to the standard desktop, preserving the flexibility associated with an open PC environment.

How Windows 11 PCs Can Get Xbox Mode

Windows 11 users who want to receive "Xbox mode" early can adjust system update settings. On the PC, open Settings, choose Windows Update and switch on "Get the latest updates as soon as they are available." When the relevant build installs, the system will offer an option to launch straight into the new gaming interface.

Microsoft plans to refine "Xbox mode" over time, relying on ongoing responses from PC players. As more users in additional markets gain access, the company expects that real-world use across varied devices will guide future design changes and functional improvements for the Windows 11 gaming experience.
