Microsoft Extends Windows 10 Security Updates Until October 2027: Who Can Enrol and How It Works

Microsoft has extended the Windows 10 Consumer Extended Security Updates (ESU) programme by another year, giving eligible users more time to continue using the ageing operating system securely. The decision comes after the company ended mainstream support for Windows 10 and encouraged users to either upgrade to Windows 11 or enrol in the paid ESU programme if their PCs could not meet the newer operating system's hardware requirements.

The latest extension means eligible Windows 10 devices can continue receiving critical security updates until October 12, 2027.

Windows 10 ESU Programme Extended Until 2027

Microsoft confirmed the extension in an updated support document, stating that users can enrol in the Consumer ESU programme at any time before October 12, 2027.

"Windows 10 support has ended. You can enrol in ESU any time until the programme ends on 12 October 2027. If you're already enrolled, your coverage will automatically continue through that date-no action needed," the company said.

The extension gives users with older hardware more time to upgrade to Windows 11 or replace their devices while continuing to receive important security patches.

Existing ESU Users Don't Need to Do Anything

Microsoft says users who are already enrolled in the Consumer ESU programme do not need to take any action. Their existing licence will automatically remain valid until October 12, 2027.

The company also notes that a single Consumer ESU licence can cover up to 10 Windows 10 devices, making it useful for households with multiple PCs.

Who Can Enrol?

The Consumer ESU programme is available for devices running:

  • Windows 10 Home (version 22H2)
  • Windows 10 Pro
  • Windows 10 Pro Education
  • Windows 10 Pro for Workstations

Eligible devices must have the latest Windows 10 updates installed before joining the programme. Users are also required to sign in with a Microsoft account during enrolment.

Microsoft Warns Against Delaying Enrolment

While users can join the programme at any point before October 2027, Microsoft warns that delaying enrolment could leave devices exposed to security risks.

According to the company, Windows 10 PCs that are not covered by ESU will become more vulnerable to malware, viruses, and other cyber threats after official support has ended.

The extended ESU programme offers a practical solution for users whose hardware cannot officially run Windows 11, allowing them to continue receiving security updates while planning a future upgrade.
