Microsoft’s First Windows 11 Update of 2026 Prevented Some PCs from Shutting Down: Emergency Fix Issued
Microsoft is dealing with new problems in its first Windows 11 security update of 2026, released on January 13th. The patch was meant to fix vulnerabilities, but instead caused shutdown and remote access issues on some systems, forcing Microsoft to rush out a rare emergency out-of-band update four days later, on January 17th.
The emergency release targets bugs that appeared after the January security update went live. Some Windows 11 devices started refusing to shut down or hibernate when Secure Launch was enabled, while other users suddenly struggled to connect using remote desktop tools, affecting both home and business setups.

Windows 11 Security Update Issues and Fixes
The shutdown failure is limited to hardware still running Windows 11 23H2, and only on Enterprise and IoT editions. Systems with Secure Launch active are at risk. Remote connection and authentication errors are more widespread, hitting Windows 11 version 25H2, Windows 10 version 22H2 ESU, and Windows Server 2025, according to Microsoft’s notes.
Microsoft described the situation in a changelog entry, confirming that the January 2026 security patch created fresh problems. The company said an out-of-band release on January 17th was needed to address both the connection errors and the Secure Launch shutdown fault. The full statement reads:
Microsoft has identified issues upon installing the January 2026 Windows security update. To address these issues, an out-of-band (OOB) update was released today, January 17, 2026. - Connection and authentication failures in remote connection applications: This issue affects multiple platforms including Windows 11, version 25H2; Windows 10, version 22H2 ESU; and Windows Server 2025. See the bottom of this message for the complete list of affected products. -Devices with Secure Launch might fail to shut down or hibernate: This issue only affects Windows 11, version 23H2.

Microsoft’s information shows how each platform is affected by the Windows 11 security update problems and the related fixes, as outlined below.

On January 18th, Microsoft added extra clarification that the shutdown and hibernate fault affects only Windows 11 23H2.
