Microsoft’s Decision to End Support for Windows 10 Could Land it in Hot Water

Microsoft is set to end support for Windows 10 in October this year. This decision has led to a lawsuit filed by a California resident. The plaintiff argues that Microsoft's move is a strategic attempt to push consumers towards purchasing new hardware and solidify its position in the generative AI market.

The lawsuit, filed by Lawrence Klein from Southern California, claims that his two laptops running Windows 10 will become unusable once support ends. These devices are not eligible for an upgrade to Windows 11. Klein's legal action demands that Microsoft provide free support for Windows 10 until its user base significantly decreases.

Generative AI Market Concerns

The lawsuit suggests that Microsoft's strategy aims to dominate the generative AI sector by encouraging users to switch to Windows 11. This version includes the AI assistant, Copilot, which functions optimally with a neural processing unit (NPU) found in newer PCs but absent in older models.

With only three months remaining until the end of support for Windows 10, many users may not purchase new devices or opt for extended support. This situation poses a heightened risk of cyberattacks or data security incidents, particularly for businesses storing sensitive consumer data.

Security Risks Highlighted

The lawsuit highlights that Microsoft's long-term business strategy could jeopardise data security not only for its customers but also for individuals who do not use Microsoft's products. Klein seeks a court order requiring Microsoft to continue offering free support until the number of devices running Windows 10 falls below a reasonable threshold.

Additionally, the lawsuit requests coverage for legal fees incurred during this process. Microsoft had previously announced that it would cease support for Windows 10 on October 14, 2025. Users are advised to upgrade to Windows 11 or enrol in the Windows 10 Consumer Extended Security Updates (ESU) programme if their devices do not meet the technical requirements.
