RCS Messaging Arrives for Some iPhone Users in the US With iOS 18 Beta
As per multiple reports on Reddit, iPhone users in the United States have begun to see the long-awaited arrival of RCS messaging, but with a significant caveat - it's currently limited to those running iOS 18 beta 2 and with compatible carriers.
RCS Now Available for Some on iOS 18 Beta
Following Apple's announcement last year to adopt RCS, carriers like AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon have now enabled the feature for users on the iOS 18 beta. This means iPhone users with these carriers can now enjoy features like typing indicators, read receipts, and high-quality media sharing when texting Android users - functionalities similar to iMessage.

Limited Availability: Beta and Carrier Dependent
However, there's a crucial catch. RCS on iPhone is currently restricted to those on the iOS 18 beta, which is pre-release software intended for developers. Additionally, only users with compatible carriers (currently AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon) can access RCS even within the beta.
What is RCS Messaging?
RCS, or Rich Communication Services, is a messaging standard that offers a richer texting experience compared to traditional SMS. It allows for features like sending larger media files, group chat improvements, and real-time message status updates.
The "Green Bubble" Issue Remains
Despite RCS, Apple has confirmed that the message bubble color differentiation will remain. iMessage conversations will still show the familiar blue bubbles, while texts to Android users will retain the green bubbles. This distinction, a source of frustration for some, was even a point of contention in a lawsuit against Apple.
Looking Ahead: Wider Rollout Expected
The limited rollout on the iOS 18 beta suggests a wider release of RCS for iPhone users with a stable iOS 18 update later this year. However, the timeline for individual carrier support remains unclear.
