Top 5 Street Safety Apps for Women in India

    With the law and order situation in the country turning vile for women, specially after the recent Delhi gang rape case that took place on December 16, 2012, where a physiotherapy student was brutally raped and her friend were beaten by a group of six men, its obvious for the women of the nation getting a feeling of insecurity to even walk of streets alone. However, you dont have to worry at all if you carry a smartphone, as a number of developers have come up with apps to help women react to these situations and remain safe.


    The recent one to get added in the list is a mobile application called 'Fight Back'. Developed by mobile value added services provider CanvasM, the application tracks a user's location and sends SOS messages to selected contacts in case of an emergency.

    Fight Back

    Women can now alert their friends and family with the push of a button if in distress, using the app called Fight Back, developed by CanvasM. In case of any emergency, the app tracks the location of the user and sends SOS alerts to selected contact numbers. On the push of the panic button, it tracks the location of the user via GPS. The company is also in the efforts to integrate the app with Delhi police's IT infrastructure at the back-end enabling the police to monitor the SOS alerts. The app is supported on Blackberry, Android and Symbian OS. The company also hopes to bring out an SMS based app which will benefit non-smartphone users.

    Delhi Helplines

    This is an app developed after being inspired by Safe Delhi helpline-booklet by Jagori. Delhi Helplines consists of helplines for police, media and lawyers, chemists, hospitals and blood banks, health, women safety and shelter homes, animal help lines, disabled and transport helplines and much more.

    This is an extremely useful and travel-friendly app that can ensure women's safety. The app tracks the person's location and sends it to loved ones through SMS at regular intervals. All it requires is the destination number to be fed into it once. The app starts working on its own in the background along with enabling GPS settings. The app can also prove to be useful to the blind and senior citizens.
