WWDC 2024: Apple Intelligence is the Company’s New Generative AI Tool for Mac, iPhone, iPad

Apple has announced its new feature, Apple Intelligence (A.I.), at WWDC 2024. Described as "personal intelligence," it prioritizes privacy. Integrated into iOS, macOS, and VisionOS, it uses personal data and context for tailored experiences. Built on large language and intelligence models, much of the processing is done locally on Apple devices.

Apple Intelligence Compatibility

Apple Intelligence will be available on the latest versions of Apple's operating systems. However, it will only be compatible with certain devices, such as the iPhone 15 Pro models as well as M1 and higher Mac and iPad devices. This limits its accessibility to newer hardware.

Apple Intelligence Comes to Siri

Apple emphasizes privacy by performing much of the processing locally. However, some of the processing is still cloud-based to enhance privacy. The new feature includes an update to Siri, making it more integrated into operating systems. It supports typed queries in addition to voice commands.

With App Intents, Siri can now integrate more directly into various apps, boosting its capabilities. Apple Intelligence will be present in apps like Mail and Messages, offering features like message composition and Smart Replies. This aims to streamline communication for users.

Emojis and Image Creation, Enhanced Search

The feature introduces Genmoji, allowing users to create customized emojis using a text field. Apple is also unveiling Image Playground, an on-device image generator, and Image Wand, a tool for Apple Pencil users to create images by circling text. These tools enhance creative expression.

Apple Intelligence improves search functionality for photos and videos. Users can now find content more easily using natural language prompts. This feature aims to simplify content discovery on Apple devices.

Apple CEO Tim Cook noted, "Most importantly, it has to understand you and be grounded in your personal context, like your routine, your relationships, your communications, and more. And of course, it has to be built with privacy from the ground up together. All of this goes beyond artificial intelligence. It's personal intelligence, and it's the next big step for Apple."
