YouTube Cracking Down on Ad Blockers Now Expanding to Third-Party Apps
In a significant move, YouTube has broadened its crackdown on ad blockers to mobile applications. The video-sharing giant warned on Monday that users employing ad-blocking apps on mobile might face playback issues.
This includes buffering or receiving an error message that content is unavailable. The initiative is part of YouTube's ongoing efforts to combat the use of ad blockers, previously targeting extensions on browsers that disabled ads during video playback.

YouTube vs Ad Blockers
Previously, YouTube had globally encouraged its users to either permit ads during videos or opt for YouTube Premium for an ad-free experience. The platform also took steps to deactivate videos for those using ad-blocking extensions.
With the latest announcement, YouTube is taking a firm stand against third-party mobile apps like AdGuard, which allow users to watch YouTube content without interruptions from ads. YouTube's policy clearly states that it does not allow third-party apps to disable ads, emphasizing the importance of ads in generating revenue for creators.
"We only permit third-party apps to utilize our API under compliance with our API Services Terms of Service," YouTube stated. The platform also mentioned that it would take necessary actions against apps that do not comply with these terms to protect its ecosystem, including its creators and audience.
YouTube's Commitment to Maintain Ad Revenue
The push against ad blockers on mobile devices signals YouTube's commitment to maintaining ad revenue and supporting the financial well-being of its content creators. While this move might not be popular among users who prefer ad-free viewing through third-party apps, YouTube suggests subscribing to YouTube Premium as a solution.
This approach highlights YouTube's determination to uphold its ad-based revenue model amidst challenges posed by ad-blocking technology.
Published on Apr 16, 2024, the latest action by YouTube underlines the ongoing battle between content platforms and ad-blocking technologies, emphasizing the platform's dedication to its creators' earnings and the overall integrity of its ad-supported ecosystem.
