What Is Alexa+?

Alexa+ is Amazon's next-generation voice assistant built around generative AI. It is designed to move beyond simple commands such as playing music, setting alarms or switching on lights.

The assistant can understand conversational requests, including partial sentences, indirect instructions and combinations of English, Hindi and Hinglish. Amazon says Alexa+ has been specifically tuned for Indian speech patterns, including colloquial phrases, family relationships and common measurements.

For example, users can make requests using terms such as "dhai baje" or "ek paav", while Alexa+ can also understand family references such as bhanja, bhateeji, jethani and devar.

Alexa+ can also maintain context across conversations and devices. This means a user can begin a request on an Echo device and continue it later through the Alexa app.

The assistant can help with shopping, music, entertainment, schedules, emails, recipes, smart home controls and other everyday tasks.

How to Activate Alexa+ on Your Amazon Account

Amazon is making Alexa+ available through an Early Access programme in India. The first step is to check whether your Amazon account is eligible.

Amazon says Prime Lite, Prime Shopping Edition and non-Prime customers will not be auto-renewed into Alexa+ once Early Access ends. These users can access the assistant through a Prime plan or a standalone Alexa+ subscription priced at ₹2,000 per month.

During Early Access, however, eligible customers can use Alexa+ without paying the subscription fee.

What Can Alexa+ Do in India?

Alexa+ brings several new capabilities to the assistant. It can recommend products, compare product features, summarise verified reviews, track Amazon deliveries and monitor wish-list price drops.

It can also control compatible smart home products without requiring users to remember exact device names. For instance, saying "it's dark" can prompt Alexa+ to understand the room context and switch on nearby lights.

Amazon is also adding integrations with services including Swiggy, EazyDiner, MakeMyTrip, TripAdvisor, Home Triangle and District by Zomato. More integrations are planned as the service expands in India.
