What is Bistro? Blinkt’s New 10-Minute Food Delivery App Taking on Zepto Café and Swiggy’s Snacc Explained
In an effort to delineate its operations from its parent company Zomato, Blinkit has introduced Bistro, a new venture focusing on quick food delivery. CEO Albinder Dhindsa emphasized the ethical considerations behind this move, stating through a post on X that Bistro will operate independently, without leveraging Zomato's extensive restaurant data.
This decision, as Dhindsa detailed, underscores a commitment to integrity over cost savings in marketing. He reiterated Zomato's pledge, voiced by co-founder Deepinder Goyal, to never introduce private labels that would directly compete with its restaurant partners on the Zomato platform. Dhindsa's announcement underscores a broader strategy to maintain a clear separation between Bistro and Zomato's existing business operations.

What is Bistro?
Bistro distinguishes itself by promising meals prepared without preservatives, food processors, or microwave processing. The initiative, according to Dhindsa, involves significant investment in research and development as well as infrastructure to ensure that delicious meals are delivered in five minutes or less.
This approach is a direct contrast to traditional fast-food offerings and showcases Blinkit's dedication to offering healthier, faster food options. This development comes at a time when the food delivery industry is under scrutiny for its practices concerning competition and relationship with restaurant partners.
Bistro's Impact on Food Delivery
The food delivery landscape is fraught with challenges, including disputes with restaurant partners over private labelling and operational practices. The National Restaurant Association of India (NRAI), representing half a million restaurants, has expressed concerns over food delivery platforms like Zomato and Swiggy launching private labels such as Bistro and Snacc.

These tensions highlight the competitive pressures and regulatory scrutiny within the industry. Moreover, reports suggest that both Zomato and Swiggy have engaged in practices that may contravene competition law, according to analysis by the Competition Commission of India. These include exclusivity contracts and promises of business growth for exclusive listings, further complicating the dynamics between delivery platforms and their restaurant partners.
The National Restaurant Association of India (NRAI) has announced plans for legal action against Swiggy and Zomato concerning the launch of their private-label food apps. Albinder Dhindsa, CEO of Zomato's Blinkit, has clarified that Zomato will not launch private brands on the Zomato app to compete with restaurant partners.
NRAI opposes the launch of Blinkit's Bistro, a new quick food delivery app, arguing that Swiggy and Zomato could exploit restaurant data, harming smaller establishments. Dhindsa responded by stating that Bistro is a separate entity with its own team and app, assuring that no Zomato restaurant data has been used, and the Zomato app will not be used for Bistro's marketing.
Will Bistro Face Competition?
Swiggy, another major player in the food delivery space, has also expanded its offerings with the launch of a separate app for Snacc, alongside other quick food services like Bolt and Swiggy Cafe.
Zepto Café, an extension of the popular Zepto grocery delivery platform, specializes in fast food delivery services. It offers a wide selection of ready-to-eat meals and snacks, ensuring quick and convenient dining options for its customers.
This indicates a growing trend among food delivery platforms to diversify their services and explore new market segments amid ongoing regulatory and competitive challenges.
Where is Bistro Available?
Bistro, operating through its own dedicated app separate from Blinkit and Zomato, has gone live in select locations across Gurugram. This marks the brand's initial move towards establishing a sustainable product-market fit.
Bistro by Blinkit represents a bold move in the fast-paced world of food delivery, setting new benchmarks for quality, speed, and ethical business practices. With its commitment to innovation, ethical operations, and fair competition, Bistro is poised to make a significant impact on the market, challenging established norms and offering a fresh alternative to traditional fast food and delivery services.
